What Is XRF Testing and Why It Matters for Your Gold
X-Ray Fluorescence is the only non-destructive way to measure gold purity accurately. Here is how it works — in plain language.
For decades, the touchstone test was the standard — scrape a small amount of gold onto a black stone, apply acid, watch the reaction. It is destructive, imprecise and depends heavily on the skill of the operator. XRF changed all of that.
How XRF works
An XRF analyser fires a focused beam of X-rays at your jewellery. Each metal element in the piece absorbs and re-emits X-rays at a characteristic energy level — gold at one level, silver at another, copper at a third. The detector reads these energy signatures and calculates the exact percentage of each element within seconds.
The entire process takes 30–60 seconds and leaves your jewellery completely undamaged. No scratching, no acid, no polishing required.
Why it matters to you as a seller
- You do not need the original purchase bill — XRF verifies purity independently
- Hallmark stamps can be faked; XRF cannot be fooled
- The result is printed or displayed immediately — no waiting, no guessing
- Each reading is accurate to within ±0.1% purity
What XRF cannot do
XRF reads the surface composition to a depth of roughly 50 microns. A piece that has been gold-plated over base metal will read as gold unless the plating is very thin. For items where surface readings are ambiguous — such as very thick plating — a reputable buyer will disclose this and may request a small drill test with your consent.
What to expect at an EasyGoldBuyer visit
Our executive places each item under the XRF probe while you watch. The reading appears on a screen you can see. The purity result feeds directly into the offer calculation — nothing is adjusted after the fact.
